What type of toothbrush should children use?
The size, filaments and decoration of the toothbrush should meet the requirements of the child at whatever age they are. The filaments should be soft and provide safe and gentle brushing for delicate teeth and gums. The head should be small to ensure that all areas of the mouth can be reached easily and the handle size should have the correct ergonomics for the age of the child
The Wisdom Step by Step range of toothbrushes are specially designed to grow with children’s needs with brushes for all ages from 0-2 years (safe and gentle cleaning of first teeth), 3-5 years (designed to clean milk teeth) and 6+ years (designed to clean mix of milk and permanent teeth).
Should children floss?
It is important to build good oral care habits at a young age. Children should be encouraged to floss from as soon as they are able but should be supervised initially to ensure they do not damage the delicate gum tissue. As flossing can be quite difficult for children to master the Wisdom Easy Flosser is recommended, as this makes flossing easier and more controllable. As with brushing children should always be supervised when flossing.
What sort of toothpaste should children use?
Use a toothpaste specifically developed for children to ensure the right levels of fluoride such as the Wisdom Step by Step range of toothpastes. It is recommended that children up to 3 years old, should use a toothpaste with a fluoride level of at least 1000ppm (parts per million). After three years old, they should use a toothpaste that contains 1350ppm-1500ppm. The level of fluoride will be indicated on the packaging of the toothpaste. Children should be supervised when brushing to minimise swallowing. Fluoride can help strengthen teeth against decay but If you are unsure about using fluoride toothpaste ask your dentist for advice.
How much toothpaste should children use?
Children of 3 years – Use a smear of toothpaste and brush twice a day.
Children under 6 years – Use a pea sized amount of toothpaste and brush twice a day.
Children should always be supervised when brushing to minimise swallowing toothpaste.
Can children use mouthwash?
Children can use mouthwash, but due to the technique involved it is only recommended for children of 6 years and over. Our Step by Step 6+ years mouthwash is alcohol free and offers a gentle antibacterial action with the recommended level of fluoride. It is important that children are supervised during use to minimise swallowing.
